Benacre Hall, Suffolk: (unexecuted) lodges for Sir Thomas Gooch Bt., c.1785 (2)

1785
Soane was economical when making variant designs for lodges for Sir Thomas Gooch. For the second of his designs, he took the plan and elevations of the twin lodges for Tendring (q.v.). His other design for Gooch also has twin lodges that are 12 foot square but each was given a pitched roof with two chimneys (for only one fireplace) and set straight rather than diagonally. The elevations and gates are similar for both Benacre designs.

There are entries under Sir Thomas Gooch in Soane's 'Accompt Book from 1781' viz: 'Two Designs of Lodges' dated 11 April 1785 followed by 'Two Drawings of Designs for / Lodges' dated 21 May 1786 and a further entry for 27 May 1786 'Four drawings of design for / Lodges'. No drawings, other than those catalogued above, exist for lodges at Benacre.

It seems that none of Soane's designs were executed. Dean (op.cit.) states that 'the present lodges date from the nineteenth century'.
