Preliminary design and finished drawing for a ceiling for the back drawing room, 1769, unexecuted (2)

1769
The back drawing room was the back room on the first storey.

This design for the ceiling of the back drawing room is an imitation of a painted vault in the Palace of Augustus, on the Palatine in Rome. It was not executed. Instead, Adam's design for the back parlour - the corresponding room on the floor below - (Adam volume 12/5) was installed in this room and remains in situ. The only element of the ceiling which does not survive are the medallions which were painted by Antonio Zucchi.
