According to Bolton this ceiling was executed in accordance with Adam's design, and survived in situ in 1922. The ceiling was lost when the house was demolished in 1929.

Stillman described this ceiling in the following terms:
'The elaborate ceiling that Adam designed for the principal room of Eglinton House represented the elegant refinement but also the freshness and variety of Adam's work at the end of the 1760s. While this complex creation of overall delicate decoration conforms to the basic concept of many Adam ceilings of this period, it also demonstrated its designer's ability to adapt his formulae and to produce an almost infinite variety of designs which evince a family resemblance.'

Furthermore, Stillman notes that through observation of the preliminary design shown in Adam volume 8/149, the colours as well as the pattern were dictated to Adam's draughtsmen.
