Preliminary design and designs for a five-block house, 1767, unexecuted (6)

None of Adam's designs for Lowther Hall or its estate buildings were executed.

This is the only scheme for the house which was designed by James Adam. It makes use of an ambitious central octagonal court, and King has suggested that this was inspired by the pentagonal block at Giacomo da Vignola's Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola, near Rome.

These drawings do not appear to represent a fully worked-up design as Adam volume 33/55 is laid out to a different scale to the others, and yet the building remains the same size on the sheet. Either the scale bar is incorrect, or - less likely - the alternative shows a smaller house.
