Preliminary design and finished drawing for alterations to the church, 1759, unexecuted (2)

The village surrounding the church had slowly shrunk during the seventeenth century, and was finally moved in 1760. The church is now surrounded by fields. The purpose of these drawings was to enlarge the steeple of the existing fourteenth-century church, by the addition of a finial to the top. According to Mauchline, Lascelles enjoyed the church as a Gothic eye catcher, although Adam's unexecuted work was doubtless intended to lend further physical gravity to the building, as it was an important landmark to the Lascelles family which establishes a sense of dynastic longevity, as it contains family monuments - among others - dating back to the medieval period.

Bolton notes the importance of Adam volume 21/148 as it is evidence of Adam's early interest in the Gothic.
