Record copies of plans to a reduced scale, February 1809 (4)

These record drawings (in a volume labelled in pen on the spine 'Country Houses No1 / Sir John Soane' and probably intended to show to potential clients) include Soane's design for detached offices for Moggerhanger (drawing 64). As built in 1812 the offices were placed close to the existing stable block of 1791-3 (for which there are no drawings) and as shown in Ptolemy Dean's plan (P. Dean, Sir John Soane and the country estate, 1999, p.131, fig.9.15). It seems as though the design catalogued here was not built. There are, for example, none of the three bowed windows of drawing 64 and the housekeeper's room with that of the butler were to remain in the north-west corner of the house (as shown on drawing 66).
Drawings 65-67 show the existing (eastern) part of the house in sepia wash and the new parts in a pink wash. The basement plan has a generous number of new cellars and has expanded beyond that shown in drawings 5 (c.1791) and 38 (1808 survey) and see also drawing 79, dated 1810. Drawing 66 for the ground floor is a copy of drawing 61 and drawing 67 is a copy of drawing 63 though without the revised window details for the nursery dated 8 June 1809.
