Four alternative preliminary designs, March-April 1784 (8)

Soane's Note Book 10 shows that he dispatched a set of drawings to the Reverend Gooch on 26 March 1784 viz. '2 Plans & Elevations formg two different Designs for his Parsonage House (finished sketches)'. Of the drawings catalogued above, drawing 1 is dated 'March 1784' and drawing 8 is dated 'April 1784'. It may be that none of the drawings (1-8) record the two designs sent initially to the client. Soane's Note Book 11 has an entry for 25 April that mentions 'Saw Mr Gooch & took plan' referring to the sketch site plan on the following page of his Note Book. It seems that Soane made the earlier designs without having first visited the site.

Drawings 1-8 have all been attributed to Robert Baldwin (fl. 1762-c.1804). The inscription of drawing 1 and the numbering of subsequent drawings are in his hand as are the room labels. Other drawings from Soane's early practice also attributed to Baldwin include drawings made for the dairy at Hammels Park, Blackfriars Bridge in Norwich and Letton Hall (q.q.q.v). All made in 1783-4 when Soane (who was without office help until he acquired his first pupil in September 1784) relied on ad hoc assistance from Baldwin. The rendered drawings (elevations) made for Saxlingham were evidently done in a hurry, lacking Baldwin's usual finesse but with his favoured green washes.
