Variant preliminary designs for the first floor, March 1822 (2)

Drawings 3 and 4 show variant designs for the chamber floor. Drawing 3 shows a wider plan, a more projecting bow window and a smaller stairwell. As in drawings 1 and 2, the designs have a geometrical stair with a landing. A bed chamber is at each corner and linked by dressing rooms. The bowed centre of the north elevation, sited over the drawing room, is occupied by a large morning room, which is probably its size and location due to the three ladies occupying the house. Its curving wall is mirrored by a similar wall on the south side, with a fireplace in the centre of the wall and doorways at its ends. As in the ground floor designs (drawings 1 and 2), the 'common staircase' is on an awkward triangular plan fitting flush with the principal staircase vestibule.
