Preliminary designs, December 1801 and May 1802 (2)

Drawings 195 and 196 are interior perspectives of the Breakfast Room from opposite sides. They both show a very similar design of a room with a pendentive domed ceiling (as before). Caryatids are positioned in the four corners of the room - supporting the pendentives - and urns (one of which could be a representation of the Cawdor vase) sit within niches on either side of the chimney piece. The only obvious difference is that drawing 196 lacks the addition of a looking glass above the chimney piece, as in drawing 195.

The bronzed caryatids were bought from Coade and Sealy of Lambeth for the Breakfast Room. There are also two models (SM MP5 and MP6) within the Soane Museum collection for the spandrel angels, represented in these two drawings.
