Survey drawings, September 1800 (2)

Drawings 47 and 48 represent the very first surveys made by Soane and John Haverfield on the purchase of Pitzhanger in September 1800. Journal 4 records one of Soane and Haverfield's visits to Pitzhanger on 17 September, to which drawing 47 is dated. It is likely that drawing 48 was made on or close to the same date as it is in Soane's hand and shows the land as it was, with pencil suggestions for alterations. These alterations included a circular path linking the house to surrounding roads which was, however, never executed. See also drawings 66 and 67 of the following scheme for site plans that relate to these survey plans.

John Haverfield (1744-1820), landscape gardener and architect, was the eldest son of John Haverfield, chief gardener of the royal gardens at Richmond and Kew and succeeded him in that post.
