A pair of Meissen plates held at the V & A Museum record the exteriors for Apsley house c.1818. King notes how the plates show the gateway to have been executed, but with slight modifications. They also record the erection of a coach house, built to the south of the offices, on the eastern side of the house. There are no surviving designs for a coach house, but King suggests that it appears to be of an Adam’s design. Indeed King points to an outline of the coach house, clearly recorded on a separate plan, c.1775, which forms part of Adam’s scheme for an unexecuted triumphal arch, to be based at Hyde Park corner (SM Adam volume 28/9). The coach house was eventually demolished 1961-62, following the decision to widen Park Lane.
