London: 4 Dean Street: designs for alterations for Robert Knight 1804, 1807 and 1808 (11)

P.Dean, Sir John Soane and London, 2006, p.196-7 has the 27 March 1804 as the date of the first drawing and of the designs states 'Not signed is drawing SM 39/1/42, which shows the more ambitious bow-ended drawing-room which masks the unavoidable extension of the new stair into the corner of the drawing-room. Being a rented property, the client evidently preferred a simpller (and no doubt cheaper) version of the plan with plain canted and symmetrically placed door lobbies. Soane's scheme was carried out very closely, and it appears on measured surveyed drawings that were made on 8 February 1808 for valuation purposes. Robert Knight himself continued to live at 40 Grosvenor Square, where Soane also carried out alterations. The building was redeveloped after wartime bombing'.

The drawings are arranged by date: thus a single design drawing, five plans signed by three hands and implying some sort of contract, and five plans that are 'of'' rather than 'for' and were probably made outside of the Soane office.
