The survey plans made for Lady Pembroke in 1798 (for example, drawings [3-4]) shows the garden
extending between the house and the stables as 57.8 feet long and 28.8 feet wide. There was also a garden house with a stair to the terrace above that fronted the stables at the end of the garden. The stables were partly built on land that had belonged to the adjacent house, that is, a strip 14 feet long by about 5 feet wide.
Survey plans made for Mr Knight do not show the garden but the extension of the house into the garden by 14 feet (shown on drawing [6] and subsequently) would have reduced its length to 43.8 feet. The new stables were 16 feet deep (Lady Pembroke's were 17 feet plus 7 feet 8 inches for the coach house). However, Mr Knight required a 'Standing for Three Carriages' that with an entrance and yard measuring 23.0 feet long by 33.9 feet wide. The carriage house has servants bedrooms built over half its width and a 'lead flat' over the other half that in the working drawings for the timber framiing ([44, 45]) is shown as having a large roof light.
