Alternative preliminary design and designs for a folly, 1783, unexecuted (3)

One and a half miles from Alnwick Castle there is a long structure which King calls a gazebo on Ratcheugh Crag. Although this is uncharacteristic of Adam, the ends of the structure are similar to his surviving designs for a folly. None of the surviving designs are known to have been executed, although there is a finished drawing duplicate of SM Adam volume 39/20 within the collection at Alnwick Castle. The inscription in William Adam’s hand on Adam volume 39/21 – if accurate – suggests that the Duke had some involvement with the design.
