Preliminary design and finished drawing for stables, 1759, unexecuted (2)

The original stable block at Kedleston was demolished to make way for the new house, and temporary stables were erected in 1759, probably to a design by the carpenter John Harris. This design by Adam was not executed but was the basis for Samuel Wyatt's later design, executed in 1767-69. Moreover, this design by Adam seems to have influenced Samuel Wyatt's later design for small domestic buildings at Hagley Hall, Worcestershire (1771), the seat of Assheton Curzon (1730-1820), Sir Nathaniel Curzon's brother.

There is a drawing similar to Adam volume 40/26 in the Kedleston collection, though it depicts a greater array of ornamental detail.
