Preliminary designs and a record drawing for a cottage, 1773, (3)

This unexecuted design for a cottage shows a modest square structure with a small porch on the principal front and a projecting bay on the rear front; a pyramidal pantile roof with a central chimney-stack; two windows on the principal front - one with leaded lights; and a semicircular arched entrance in the front porch. Only the ground floor is shown in the plans but it does include a staircase within the rear projecting bay (Adam volume 46/149), providing access to a further storey, most likely in the pyramidal loft space. What is puzzling, however, is having a staircase of six treads, meaning that each riser would need to be 1 foot high - uncomfortably high - to give a ceiling height of six feet.
