Designs and finished drawings for the basement, ground, first and attic storeys of a house, c1783, unexecuted (10)

SM Adam volumes 36/10-12 give orientation to the scheme with title inscriptions noting north, south, east and west. For clarity I have maintained this orientation reference when cataloguing the drawings, however it is worth noting that these inscriptions are all in the hand of William Adam, who also incorrectly assigns these drawings to a scheme for White’s Chocolate House, St James’s Street.

The versos of SM Adam volumes 36/13 and 36/18 bear inscriptions recording their proposed placement within the Book. This may refer to the order in which the drawings were compiled in their volumes by the Adam family, following the deaths of Robert and James. Alternatively it may be in reference to the Adam office’s intended publication of their castle and country villa designs, a subject explored by Rowan.
