Alternative finished drawings for a chimneypiece for the drawing room, c1767, as executed (2)

This chimneypiece was executed in the drawing room of the Governor's House, now The Highlanders Museum, at the southern end of the star-shaped fort.

The pencil inscription on Adam volume 22/237, 4t House D[urham] Y[ard], suggests that Adam had intended to reuse the design at the Adelphi, as was the case with various other chimneypiece designs of the 1760s. In this case it was clearly intended for one of the rooms at 4 Adam Street. Indeed, a close variant copy of the design was made for the dining room at 4 Adam Street (Adam volume 24/8), corresponding with the pencil inscription.
