Half-title in each volume reads 'Julie, Ou La Nouvelle Héloyse. Tome ...'. Rousseau's epistolary novel about a young man's requited love for a virtuous wife, drawing on his frustrated love for Mme. d'Houdetot, was first published in 1761. One of the most important novels of the eighteenth century, it is regarded as a forerunner of the Romantic novel. The 'Seconde Préface, Ou Entretien Sur Les Romans' was first published separately in 1761. The plates, engraved after Gravelot, are numbered 1--12, XIII with descriptive text directing the placement of the plates for each part in the preliminaries, except for pl. XIII which is captioned 'Page 104'. The final leaf of part I is blank.

Copy Notes Some plates are misplaced (pt III: pl. 6 at p. 40 and 5 at p. 68; pt 4: pl. 8 at p. 38 and 7 at p. 197; pt. VI: pl. XIII at p. 11, 11 at p. 158, 12 at p. 194). A note in ink in pt. VI detects the misplaced plate. Soane's pencil marginalia passim, but intensive in a few places; mainly translations; some marginal notes in ink. On the rear free-endpaper of vol. I a reference to an underlined passage in pt I, p. 96. On the front free-endpaper of vol. III a note: 1 Quire of Gilt Paper, 1 Pair of Compasses [ligature]. Verses in French inscribed in pencil by an earlier hand on the endpapers of vol. I: Quand Louis me dit / ma Louise // je t'aime et n'aimerai / que toi // sans le Vouloir il faut / que je dise // je l'aime cent fois plus / que moi // il m'a juré amour / eternelle // Et Louis n'est pas un / Menteur // il me sera toujours fidéle // Si j'en juge d'apres mon / coeur [...]. A copy of 'La Nouvelle Heloise 3 vol.', probably this one, is recorded in the manuscript list of Soane's library c. 1782, in his 'Notes Italy and Italian Language' (SM Vol 162), pp. 291--287 (q.v.). See Du Prey, John Soane's architectural education (1972), appendix B, pp. 354--363, no. 17. Another copy of 'Heloise' in three volumes was purchased from Floyer for £9 9s. on 20 June 1803 (Acct Book 1792--1805, loose sheet), but this seems a high price for a relatively modest set and may refer to another copy no longer in Soane's library.

Binding C18th calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red and green morocco spine-labels. Bound in three volumes.
