A complete revision of François Gayot de Pitaval's work of the same title, redrafting each case to improve its narrative qualities and with the addition of new ones. From vol. III onwards the title-page verso lists the Parisian booksellers from whom the work was available, the names varying: La veuve Savoie [later Savoie]; Saillant & Nyon [later Nyon; Nyon l'aíné, & fils]; Le Clerc; Guillyn; Cellot imprimeur; la veuve Desaint; Durand, neveu; Delalain; Moutard; Bailly; Humblot; Duplain.

Copy Notes Bought from John Cumming for 3s. 3d., 19 May 1802. (Spiers Box. Miscellaneous Booksellers; Jnl 4, p. 407). Volume I has bookseller's code in pencil on front free-endpaper, and final free-endpaper inscribed in ink 55555.

Binding C18th mottled 'catspaw' calf, blind-ruled borders, gilt-panelled spines, marbled endpapers. The first twenty volumes have floral spine decoration with brown spine-labels and the spine-numbering in arabic numerals; volumes twenty-one and twenty-two have gilt-tooled acorns with red spine-labels and the spine-numbering in roman numerals.
