Books I & II translated by C. Vischard de Saint-Réal, books III & IV by N.H. Mongault. Title-pages printed in red and black, with engraved vignette. The vol. I frontispiece (sig. [A1]) depicting Cicero at a desk in his library receiving a missive by a boy at an open door is the same as that used in the edition printed by Husson in the same year of the Lettres de Cicéron à ses amis (q.v.). With final blank leaves in volumes II and III.

Copy Notes Volume I second front free-endpaper inscribed in ink 0/4/0 / John Soane / 1803 and in pencil 3 V. 4.6. All three volumes are inscribed on free-endpapers in ink WMeyer (partially rubbed out in vol. I). In volume I, sig. A7 is misplaced between A5 and A6.

Binding C18th mottled sheep, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-labels, marbled end-papers, red and blue stained text-block edges.
