Preface and dedication signed by Richard Steele. Formerly attributed to Lady Mary Wray, but now known to have been compiled 'from the several writings of our greatest divines' (preface) by George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne, whose contract for it with the publisher Jacob Tonson is extant in the Osborn Collection, Yale. Steele's part in the publication was merely 'to write a preface & to subscribe his name' (contract). Engraved frontispieces signed 'Lud. Du Guernier inv. et sculpt.' Indexes at the end of each volume. Advertisements for books printed for Jacob Tonson on final leaf of vol. II. ESTC n19418.

Binding C18th calf, gilt-ruled and blind-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spine with central lozenge, red leather spine-label.
