The editorship of this collection of passages of verse arranged alphabetically by subject is variously ascribed to Oliver Goldsmith and Samuel Derrick; the ESTC attributes it to Samuel Derrick. 'The editor hopes the work may be also an agreeable present to the ladies, many of whom boast a more refined taste than the generality of the other sex'. ESTC t42700; Roscoe A 412.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting volumes III--IV. Bought from Thomas Boone for 5s., 9 June 1804. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.4). Boone's invoice and the pencil inscription on the second front free-endpaper Complete -s5- / 4 Vols in two indicate that the work was complete when Soane purchased it. Only volumes I--II are now in Soane's library, suggesting that the second volume containing vols III--IV was lost or disposed of at a later date, certainly before 1834, when additions by George Bailey to the MS. catalogue of Soane's library compiled by C.J. Richardson in 1831 record it as missing. Earlier shelfmark in pencil on the first front free-endpaper C. 2. 38; another inscription in in on rear free-endpaper 4V. in 2.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-panelled spine, red and brown morocco spine-labels. Bound in one volume.
