Hammond's translation was first published in 1756--61. Volume II is without the edition statement and has imprint: 'Printed for T. Davies, 1772'. With an index and a final advertisement leaf for forthcoming works printed for T. Davies and T. Payne. Polybius's History was an important influence on eighteenth-century political thought. ESTC t117894 (vol. I), t152790 (vol. II).

Copy Notes Purchased from John Cumming together with copies of Thucydides (q.v.), Polybius (q.v.), Hooke's Roman history (q.v.), Murphy's Tacitus (q.v.) and De Moivre (q.v.) for a total of £9 9s. on 16 September 1801. (Journal 4, p. 369). Front free-endpaper inscribed in pencil 2 Vol - £1-8-. Blotting paper used as a book-mark at p. 121 in vol. I where the text discusses the lie of the Alps, with pencil inscription: Daudet - Tartarin dans les Alpes [indicative of a reader of the 1880--90s]; on the other side: a partial drawing, perhaps of a ceiling or a rose window - possibly by James Wild, curator of SJSM 1878--92.

Binding C18th calf, gilt-ruled spines, red and black morocco spine-labels.
