This is a compilation of previously printed plays with varying imprints and dates from 1782 to 1808. Each play has separate title-page, pagination and register, with imprint of earlier date than that of the general title-page. Contents: Vol. I. Taste (1799). The Englishman in Paris (1808). The author (1808). The Englishman returned from Paris (1808). The knights (1807). The mayor of Garrat (1797). The orators (1808). The minor (1798). The lyar (1805). The patron (1794). -- Vol. II. The commissary (1788). The lame lover (1808). The bankrupt (1782). The cozeners (1795). The maid of Bath (1795). The Nabob (1795). The devil upon two sticks (1794). A trip to Calais and The Capuchin (1795). 'The Capuchin' has a special undated title-page but the pagination and register follow on from 'A Trip to Calais', being that comedy as it was altered for performance. Page 47 of 'The Mayor of Garrat' is misnumbered '43', and page 7 of 'The Maid of Bath' is misnumbered '9'. 'Taste' and 'The Minor' each have an engraved frontispiece and 'The Orators' has a woodcut vignette on p. 19. Several of the plays have publishers' advertisements at the end.

Copy Notes In Volume I, the last page of 'The Englishman in Paris' is misbound after the title-page of 'The author'. A 4-volume set purchased by Soane from Thomas Boone for £1 8s. on 21 February 1810 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.2.8) is not now in the Soane Museum.

Binding C19th polished sprinkled calf, gilt-ruled border (watermark on pastedown at front of volume II reading 1818), gilt-tooled spine compartments, red and black spine-labels.
