Volume I only. John Hall Stevenson, master of Skelton Hall in Yorkshire ('Crazy Castle') and author of 'Crazy Tales' (1762), the model for his friend Laurence Sterne's Eugenius in Tristram Shandy (q.v.), was notorious for his licentious and occasionally blasphemous satirical verse which included imitations of La Fontaine, Rabelais, Boccaccio and Chaucer and for his club of 'Demoniacs' in the spirit of Francis Dashwood's 'Franciscans'. His 'Makarony Fables ... by Cosmos, Mythogelastik Professor, and F. M. S.' (1767) were really squibs directed against the political opponents of John Wilkes, in particular John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. The first volume of the collected works includes verses 'To My Cousin Shandy, On His Coming To Town' signed 'Antony Shandy', written in response to the publication of the first two volumes of Tristram Shandy by Sterne, who used his extensive library at Skelton Hall. ESTC t10188.
