PROCLUS (ca. 410--485)
[On the Timaeus. English. 1820]
The commentaries of Proclus on the Timæus of Plato, in five books; containing a treasury of Pythagoric and Platonic physiology. Translated from the Greek, by Thomas Taylor. Two volumes. Vol. I. (--II.).
London: printed for and sold by the author, No. 9, Manor Place, Walworth, Surrey, by A.J. Valpy, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, 1820.
2 vols ; 31.8 cm. (4º)
I: xii, 472 p.

The last leaf of vol. II comprises a printed list of Taylor's works (listing the present work as costing £5 10s.) and an advertisement for Valpy's periodical The Classical Journal, No. XLI for March, 1820. Taylor was a Platonist philosopher and translator of the classics who was assistant secretary to the Society of Arts from 1797 to 1806.

Copy Notes Inscription on front free-endpaper: Decr. 1821. of Mr Taylor / c-c-s. Enclosed loose in vol. I are two proposals for printing by subscription (one for this work, q.v. and the other for Taylor's Iamblichus on the mysteries of the Egyptians, Chaldeans, and Assyrians, q.v., a copy of which was apparently obtained by Soane at the same time as the present work, q.v.) and a printed list of translations and original works by Taylor (q.v.) with MS. annotations (not by Soane). The list of books (in its printed form in three pages), is almost identical to that given in two columns in vol. II of the present work, but some of the book prices are cheaper, probably indicating a later date, and has an additional item inserted at the end of the list of original works.

Binding Original C19th grey paper boards and spine with printed paper spine-label with price'5l. 10s. bds.'. The spine-title of vol. II has a cancel slip attached ('On The').
