Copy Notes Originally folded, sealed and addressed as a letter to Sir John Soane / Chelsea College. Page [3] bears an ALs. to Soane from W.H. Spicer, dated Chelsea College / December 8th, which begins My dear Sir John / As I have been given to / understand by my Father, that you are / likely to prove a kind patron to anything / connected with science or literature, I do / not hesitate to write to you in behalf of the / little Magazine, of which I enclose a prospectus. I shall feel proud to add your name to our list / of subscribers, ... . It would appear that the writer of this letter (and probable editor of the magazine) was the son of Colonel William Spicer who, with Sir Thomas Lawrence and Sir Francis Chantrey, had been appointed by Soane as trustees of a legacy to his grandchildren in 1829. See A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), p. 430.

Binding Loose bifolium.
