Title taken from the engraved title-plate (dated 1792) in tom. I; engraved specific title-plates in each volume, reading 'Opere del Conte Algarotti Edizione Novissima' are dated between 1791 and 1794. Algarotti was a writer, collector, amateur etcher and polymath who was esteemed by his contemporaries for his wide knowledge and elegant presentation of advanced ideas in works such as Il Newtonianismo per le dame, 1737, a popular exposition of Newtonian optics, and spent more than nine years at the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia. His other writings include studies on classical themes and essays on the subjects of architecture (1753), the opera (1755), and painting (1762). The first complete edition of Algarotti's Opere was published in Livorno in 1764--65. With engraved head and tail-pieces, some designed by Algarotti, others by 'Mingardi' (i.e. Francesco Mengardi, d. 1812), engraved by Rafaello Morghen (1750--1833) and Francesco Novelli (1767--1830).
