The first edition. Pagination is irregular but the register and text are continuous. The work was reprinted in 1702 and an greatly enlarged edition was published by Pietro Santi Bartoli's son Francesco as Le pitture antiche delle grotte di Roma, e del sepolcro de' Nasonii in 1706. For details of further editions and of an album of Santi Bartoli's drawings of the 'Sepulcrum Nasonii' now in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, see notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 214 (Latin ed. of 1750).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on front paste-down S. Riou 1745, i.e. the soldier and architect Stephen Riou (1720--1780), and in pencil aut Cæsar aut/ Nullus. With pencil sketches of figures including a Madonna and child and a Roman centurion on the rear pastedown and endpapers; also, repeated, the name Roberto in a large slanted hand with calligraphic flourishes on the initial.

Binding C17th vellum, spine lettered in ink 'Sepolcro/ de Nasoni'.
