Originally issued in parts in demy octavo, royal octavo and demy quarto, and completed in March 1828. Volume I includes a group of nine plates prefaced by a printed slip informing the binder that they were 'intended for the Second Volume' but are to be bound at the end of the first. An account of Soane's house illustrated by two plates is contained in volume I, pp. 313--20. See B. Adams, London illustrated (London 1983), no. 146; BAL, Early printed books, no. 424.

Copy Notes Copy 1: This is a copy of the quarto issue 'with Proofs on India paper'. Imperfect; volume II wanting one of the two plates of the Regent's Park Terraces called for in the list of plates. One of the two plates of the Royal Exchange called for in the list of plates in volume I is misbound at the end of volume II, which also contains a duplicate of the plate of the Rotunda, Drury Lane Theatre from volume I. Volume II is inscribed in ink on the front free-endpaper Mem: several Sheets of the Letterpress/ Mis-placed -10 - to 15 -. In fact, both letterpress and plates between pages 8 and 17 are misbound. Uncut and with most sheets in volume II unopened.
Copy 2: Six proof plates only are included with an imperfect copy of Gwilt's unpublished An historical, descriptive, and critical account of the cathedral church of St. Paul, London, 1823 (q.v.), bound with six other pamphlets.

Binding Copy 1: C19th quarter straight-grain maroon roan, gilt-ruled spine with title direct-lettered in decorative border, marbled-paper boards. The upper cover of volume I with printed label reading, within a Greek key border, 'Illustrations Of The Public Buildings Of London. Vol. I. With 72 Engravings. Price 7 Guineas Quarto, with Proofs on India Paper; 4 Guineas Imperial 8vo; and 2l. 12s. 6d. Medium 8vo.'
Copy 2: C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine, black spine-label gilt-lettered.
