[Builder's dictionary. Variant state]
The builder's dictionary: or, gentleman and architect's companion. Explaining not only the terms of art in all the several parts of architecture, but also containing the theory and practice of the various branches thereof, ... Faithfully digested from the most approved writers on these subjects. In two volumes. (Vol. II.)
London (Place), printed for A. Bettesworth and C. Hitch; and S. Austen,, 1734.
2 vols ; 19.9 cm. (8°)
I: [494] p., engr. frontis., XV pl.
II: [508] p., XVI-XXXIII (i.e. 18) pl.

Variant setting. In this copy the verso of the title-leaf in vol. I is blank. The line beginning 'Faithfully Digested ...' in the title is set in roman rather than italic type and ends with the words 'and Recommended by' followed by a blank space. The recommendation by Hawksmoor, James and Gibbs appears only in vol. II, being inserted as a singleton to face the title-page of vol. II as described in the other variant (q.v.), but this time with no directions to the binder. Signatures B--H in vol. I of this copy reveal some variation and movement in the type-setting as compared with that described in the other variant, e.g. line 1 of fol. B5v has 'Architecture' set in italic rather than roman type. ESTC t4370.
