Lugt 5267. Playfair's drawings and a very small collection of books were disposed of by his widow at this sale which was arranged in London with the help of his friends Joseph Farington and John Soane. It was at this sale that Soane acquired the drawings by Playfair presently grouped in the 'Playfair Portfolio' (Drawer 78, sets 1--21; cf. description of lots 66--87).

Copy Notes Copy 1: Annotated in pencil with the prices fetched.
Copy 2: With the lots purchased for Soane (but not including lots 66--87, i.e. the drawings) annotated in ink with the prices paid. Lot 9 ('Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Gréce', q.v.) is annotated 1:13:0, but in the right hand margin Soane has written I believe 1:3:0 (the price recorded in copy 1). Lot 88 ('An excellent well-made pentagraph, in a mahogany case') is inscribed Mr Revely, referring to its subsequent resale by Soane to Willey Revely for the auction price of £1 2s. on 14 January. (Journal 2, p. 364). An unnumbered extra lot of a Drawing table is noted at the end as having made 2 guineas.

Binding Copy 1: Unstitched. Later white paper spine.
Copy 2: Unstitched and uncut.
