The Society of Dilettanti, of which Christie was a member, had intended to publish this essay as an introduction to the plates of the second volume of its Specimens of antient sculpture (vol. I, 1809, q.v.). That project was never completed however and instead the essay was published posthumously as a fragment of the history of sculpture that Christie had originally planned.
Binding C19th half brown cloth, dark green paper boards, black leather spine-label.
