The anonymous text was supplied by William Combe, a journalist who had also supplied the text to Boydell's History of the Thames (1794--96). The text and plates were originally issued in parts from May 1809 to April 1811 (the composition of these parts is evident from the arabic numbers which occasionally appear on the unpaginated leaves). Copy Notes Bought from John Britton for £3 13s. 6d., 8 November 1812. (Jnl 5, p.69; SNB). Volume I inscribed in pencil on second front free-endpaper sells at 3 Gnas Bds / extra bound £3. 13. 6.

Binding Contemporary C19th diced russia, gilt double-ruled and blind roll-tooled borders with gilt-tooled corner fans, gilt-and blind-tooled spine, marbled edges and endpapers, blue silk bookmarks.
