FÊTES PUBLIQUES ...
Fêtes publiques données par la ville de Paris, a l'occasion du mariage de Monseigneur le Dauphin, les 23. et 26. fevrier M.DCC.XLV.
[Paris, 1745.]
Engr. title-pl. (engr. text on verso), engr. frontis., 18 pl. of engr. text (on 9 leaves), [19] pl. (10 double-page) ; 62.2 cm. (2º)

A commemorative volume on the celebrations of the marriage of the Dauphin Louis (father of Louis XVI) to Maria Theresa of Spain. The engraved title-page was designed by Charles Eisen (1720--1778) and engraved by Jean-Baptiste Delafosse (d. 1775). The allegorical frontispiece is by Jean-Baptiste Le Bas (1707--1783) after 'Charles Hulin', i.e. Charles Hutin (1715--1776). The wholly engraved text is printed within decorative page-borders, printed from single integral coppers in the case of pages 13--18. The same borders with the original engraved text erased were then reused for the text of pages [2] to 9, printed from separate coppers. Page [1] is printed in an integral decorative border not used elsewhere in the text and page [12] is an engraved ornamental tail-piece within the same separately printed decorative border used for pages 10 and 11. The architectural plates were probably designed and drawn by Jean-François Blondel (1681--1756), uncle of the better known Jacques-François (1705--1774); a second livre de fête 'sur les desseins de François Blondel Architecte du Roy' was published in 1747 under the title Fete publique donnée ... a l'occasion du mariage de Monseigneur le Dauphin le 13. fevrier M.DCC.XLVII, [1747 ] (q.v.), and Jean-François was probably also responsible for the plates in the earlier Description des festes données par la ville de Paris, a l'occasion du mariage de Madame Louise-Elisabeth de France ..., 1740 (q.v.). The Soane copy of the present work (unlike those described by BAL and Millard) has the architectural plates bound in two sequences with plates [1--13] following the first section of the text (pages [1--12]) and the remaining six plates after the final page of text. BAL Early printed books, no. 1062; Millard I, 27.
