GIBBS, James (1682--1754)
Bibliotheca Radcliffiana.
Oxford (Place), [1737].
V pl. (2 fold.) ; 46.9 cm. (2º)

Title taken from the printed paper wrapper (not present in the Soane copy). Not to be confused with a different work with the title Bibliotheca Radcliviana published by Gibbs in 1747 (q.v.), this is the first impression of a suite of engravings by George Vertue ordered by the trustees of the Radcliffe Camera for private circulation. Although sources are confused, it seems likely that 600 copies were printed in May 1737, and a second impression was ordered from Vertue in February 1740 to incorporate alterations. The BAL and Soane copies are printed in sepia. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1204; see also Harris and Savage, p. 211.

Copy Notes Bound last with copies of Carlo Nolli, Dell'Arco Trajano in Benevento, 1770 (q.v.); Lorenzo Capponi, Pianta e spaccato del nuovo teatro di Bologna, 1771 (q.v.); and Cosimo Morelli, Pianto, e spaccato del nuovo teatro d'Imola, 1780 (q.v.). The volume is inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper Binding 12s-, probably in Soane's hand, suggesting he may have arranged for these works to be bound together.

Binding C19th half sprinkled calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine, red leather spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Trajan's Arch / Italian Theatres'.
