Copy Notes Inscribed on front free-endpaper 22 Feb: 1803 Cost £2.10 -/ very scarce See Lord Orford's Letter subjoined to Do/ W Lort. This refers to a two page letter from Horace Walpole, Berkeley Square, Aug. 20. 1781, addressed on the wrapper to 'the Reverend Dr Lort at the palace Lambeth', thanking him for various communications including a sale catalogue of his pictures and Tables historiques, and pointing out various errors in the latter. Added in another, unidentified hand, initialled J.S., is a note referring to Zanetti's Della Pittura Veneziana, 1771. The Reverend Michael Lort (1725--1790) was an antiquarian and bibliophile. He lived at Lambeth from 1779 to 1783 as domestic chaplain to Archbishop Cornwallis and was subsequently made librarian there. He was noted for his generosity in imparting information and gave the architect John Carter his 'first insight and encouragement'.
