JOURNAL DES BATIMENS ...
[Journal des batimens civils et des arts]
Journal des Monumens et des Arts. No. 319. (--395).
A Paris de l'imprimerie du Journal des monumens et des arts, (l'an XII [1803--4].)
3 vols ; 20.1 cm. (8º)

This twice-weekly periodical began publication in 1800 under the title Journal des batimens civils et des arts. By issue no. 319 ['1er. Vendémiaire an 12.', i.e. 23 September 1803] its title had altered to the above; with issue no. 321 ['8 Vendemiaire an 12.'] its title changed to Journal des batimens, des monumens et des arts. Each volume consists of three months' issues prefaced by a separately printed table of contents, which is provided with its own title-page reading Table des matières contenues dans le ... Journal des Batimens, des Monumens et des Arts ... . The 'Avis' on the verso of this title-page notes that these tables appeared annually divided by trimester so that subscribers could purchase them individually for binding in each corresponding volume of the Journal, as here. The final leaf of the first and third trimesters is a blank.

Copy Notes This set consists of volumes 13-15 only, containing nos. 319-395 issued during the first three 'trimestres' [i.e. quarters] of 'An XII', the 'Quatrième Année' of the Journal. The final leaf of the 'Table Des Matières' in vol. 14 in this set is followed by a single advertisment leaf with drop-head title reading 'Journal Des Batimens Civils, Des Monumens Et Des Arts', the original title of the periodical, referring to earlier issues ranging between nos. 35 and 85, and with the address of the 'directeur François Camille' corrected in ink from 'rue de Sèves' to his later address at quai de la Monnaie. The 'Table Des Matières' in volume I is inscribed in ink on its title-page John Soane / 1819, which suggests that this set may have been purchased by Soane during his visit to Paris in the late summer of that year. Round library shelf-labels on spines inscribed in ink with shelfmark in the form Z [over] 97.1(-3)F; the same shelfmark repeated in ink on the front pastedown of each volume.

Binding Early C19th quarter marbled calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spines, red spine-labels.

Reference Number 2536
