LAWRENCE, Sir Thomas, P.R.A. (1769--1830)
Sir Thomas Lawrence's magnificent collection of drawings.
[London]:, [1835?].
3, [1] p. ; 25.3 cm. (4º)

Drop-head title; p.[4] blank. An advertisement issued by the executor of Lawrence's insolvent estate, Archibald Keightley, from the offices of 'Walmsley & Co. 43, Chancery Lane', announcing that he is 'now prepared to treat with Foreign Courts, or any Nobleman or Gentleman, for the Sale of the matchless Collection' at £20,000. It is probable therefore that this announcement dates from after the failure of Eastlake's efforts to purchase the collection for the National Gallery in 1834, but before it was bought by Samuel Woodburn in June 1835 for a reputed £15,000. Woodburn is described at this stage as having 'very handsomely undertaken for the present to communicate all necessary particulars to those who may be disposed to treat for purchase.'

Binding Loose bifolium.

Reference Number 2607

Additional Names Keightley, Archibald; Lawrence, Sir Thomas (1769--1830) - Collections; Woodburn, Samuel (1785 or 6--1853)
