At least six editions are recorded of this guide-book to the noted pilgrimage resort of Loreto, famous for the Santa Casa, or Holy House of the Virgin. One of the most celebrated of Catholic shrines, the house has been venerated as the actual building in which the Holy Family lived from at least the fifteenth century. According to tradition the small edifice was carried by angels from Nazareth to Tersatto in Dalmatia to escape destruction by the Turks in 1291, and moved again across the Adriatic in 1294 to its present location at Loreto in central Italy. In reality, the house was almost certainly located in the Holy Land, but was moved, stone by stone, and shipped to Italy to save it from the ravages of the crusades.

Binding C18th Italian floral decorated paper wrappers.
