[Bibliographical catalogue of books privately printed. Advertisement]
Preparing for publication, a catalogue of privately printed books, including those printed by the Roxburghe and Bannatyne Clubs, and at the Auchinlech, Lee-Priory, Strawberry-Hill, and Darlington presses, etc. etc.; with some account of them. By John Martin, F.L.S.
[London]: [1832].
[2] p. ; 23.1 cm. (4°)

Single quarter sheet with drop-head title. Verso blank. Date from accompanying letter. The first edition of Martin's A bibliographical catalogue of books privately printed appeared in 1834. As in a 'former announcement of this Work' the main purpose of this notice is to canvass for bibliographical contributors rather than to advertise for subscribers. The editor no doubt hoped that the first would tend to become the second. The format of the work and the size of the edition have been fixed upon - 'one octavo volume ... limited to Two Hundred and Fifty Copies, of which Fifty will be printed on Large Paper' - but its contents and price have not. The publishers are named as J. and A. Arch, Payne and Foss, and J. Rodwell.

Copy Notes Sent to Soane as an enclosure with an ALs from Martin dated 2 November 1832, having in the notices of books belonging to that / class, two of yours - I am / very desirous of knowing if I am correct, and requesting confirmation that Soane's A statement of facts respecting the designs of a new House of Lords, 1799 (q.v.) and Description of the house and museum on the north side of Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, 1830 (q.v.) were printed only for private distribution. On 13 March 1834 Martin again wrote to Soane as the author of one or two printed in this mode / at your expense, ... soliciting your / patronage, and permission to / send one for your inspection. (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.129). The work itself, however, is not in Soane's library.

Binding Loose sheet.
