Imprint from foot of p. 28: Compton & Ritchie, Printers, Middle Street, Cloth Fair, London. The letter is addressed from 34 Arlington Street, Camden Town and dated 18th June, 1836. John Millard had lost his position in the Manuscripts department of the British Museum in 1835 and was exercised in the debates over the management of the Museum.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on title-page To Sir John Soane/ &c &c &c/ with the Author's/ Complts. Millard was Assistant Librarian of the Surrey Institution, of which Soane was a vice-president.
