[12], 484, VIII p., engr. frontis. ; 16.5 cm. (12º)

First edition published anonymously in Paris in 1699. Soane made extensive notes from the Abrégé while preparing his lectures in 1806. De Piles measured the success of a painting by the immediacy of its impression as one would a piece of music, regardless of subject matter. Soane's extensive notes from the work suggest that he sought to transfer de Piles's doctrines from painting to architecture. (See Watkin, pp. 189-90, 199-200; Soane Case 142 and 143.)

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil on second front free-endpaper and second rear free-endpaper with page numbers and other numerals. Marginal marks of emphasis in pencil. Bought for 2s. 6d. at 41 Oxford Street, left hand near Soho Square on 20 April 1802. (Jnl 4, p. 389; SNB).
