SIRIGATTI, Lorenzo (fl. 1596--1625)
[Pratica di prospettiva. Part 1. English. 1756]

The practice of perspective, from the original Italian of Lorenzo Sirigatti. With the figures engraved by Isaac Ware, Esq;
London:, printed for the author, and sold by T. Osborne, and J. Shipton; J. Hodges; L. Davis; J. Ward; and R. Baldwin,, 1756.
[2], 5--8, [98] p., add. etch. t.-pl. : 43 [i.e. 49] full-p. illus. ; 42.8 cm. (2°)

A translation by Isaac Ware of the first part of Sirigatti's La pratica di prospettiva, the first edition of which (in two parts) had been published in Venice and Florence, 1596. The full-page etched illustrations are numbered 1--43 (plate [6] being unnumbered), with unnumbered illustrations [6 bis]--[10 bis] and [12 bis]. The title-page is dated 1756 but copies appear to have been in circulation before the end of 1755. Controversy followed its publication, centred on Joshua Kirby's claim that Ware's translation was intended to compete with his own work Dr. Brook Taylor's method of perspective made easy, the second edition of which was published in 1755, and Ware's project was not a commercial success. ESTC t153768; BAL, Early printed books, no. 3045; see also Harris and Savage, pp. 467--8, and Millard II, pp. [164]-5.
