A Paris (Place), chez Demortain,, [c. 1716].
Engr. title-page, [33] pl. (=34 impressions, 20 double-page) ; 50.4 cm. (2°)

One of two sets in the Soane Museum of this collection of plans and views of Versailles published by Gilles De Mortain, neither of which conforms altogether to the descriptions given in BAL or Millard. The collation given above applies only to the present copy; see the description of the other Soane copy (q.v.) for the make-up of this work as more usually found and references to other descriptions.

The present copy appears to be a very early issue of the work, lacking (and possibly pre-dating?) the inclusion of the engraved privilege leaf dated 30 January 1716 found in most copies. All but seven of the plates are unnumbered; the plates included are those which later received the numbers 1, 4--9, 12--32 and 38 of the main sequence, and 1--3 of the Le Pautre suite of 'Plans, Coupes, Profils et Elevations de la Chapelle ...'. The six general views drawn and engraved by Pierre Menant (pl. 4--9 in later issues) are here numbered 1--6 bottom right, and the title-plate, later altered to 'une Balustrade ... par dessus laquelle on voit l'Orangerie, ce qui est représenté dans la 9e. Planche', refers here to 'la 7e. Planche ...', numbered '5' but bound seventh (not counting the title-plate). Plate 19 ('La Fontaine de l'Obelisque') is numbered bottom left. The third Le Pautre plate, printed on a smaller sheet, is an earlier state of the title-plate (pl. 1) of the 'Plans, Coupes, ...' suite, comprising a 'Profil de la Chapelle Royale ...' and a 'Plan du Rez de Chaussée de la nouvelle Chapelle Royale ...', the latter being later erased and replaced by the title lettering in a cartouche. The plate bound last in this copy is an earlier state of pl. 38 'Machine De Marly' without the inset 'Plan Géometral' top left.

Binding C18th quarter red sheep, marbled paper boards, vellum corners.

Reference Number 3495

Additional Names Château de Versailles (Versailles, France), Pictorial works; Parc de Versailles (Versailles, France), Pictorial works; Le Pautre, Pierre (1660--1744); De Mortain, Gilles (18th cent.)
