The verso of the half-title lists works by the author (not to be confused with Jean Louis Viel de Saint-Maux, author of Lettres sur l'architecture, 1787, q.v.) available from Perronneau, 'Le tout composant deux volumes'. The present work forms the first part of one volume of what appears to be a pro tempore arrangement of Viel's works up to 1800 brought together by Perronneau, the companion volume containing Viel's Principes de l'ordonnance et de la construction des batimens; ... Première partie, 1797 (q.v.). The other contents of this volume, catalogued and also available separately, are as follows: Moyens pour la restauration des piliers du dome du Panthéon françois, 1797 (q.v.); Plans et coupes du projet de restauration des piliers du dome du Panthéon françois, 1798 (q.v.), Projet d'un monument consacré à l'histoire naturelle, 1779 (q.v.), and an untitled collection of plates described in the publisher's list as a 'Collection de plans, coupes et élévations de bâtimens ... gravés par Taraval et par Gaitte' (q.v.).

Copy Notes The two-volume set was bought at Christie's, 17 February 1815, lot 61 for £1 10s. (See marked-up copy of the sale catalogue in Christie's archive). Inscribed with a few pencil translations of French words in the margins, and with a draft note in pencil in Soane's hand regarding a defect in something unstated loosely inserted between pages 20 and 21.

Binding C19th half red roan, gilt-ruled spine, marbled-paper boards, green spine-label lettered in gilt 'Viel's/ Decadence/ De/ L'Architecture'. Uniform bound with the companion volume (q.v.).
