LE SAGE, Alain-René (1668--1747)
[Le diable boiteux. 1805]
Le diable boiteux, suivi d'Une journée des parques, et des Béquilles du diable boiteux, par Le Sage. Nouvelle édition.
A Paris chez Billois, libraire, 1805.
xlviii, 503, [1] p., engr. frontis. ; 19.6 cm. (8º)

Includes a 'Vie de Le Sage'. Le Sage's Spanish-inspired prose satire on Parisian society was first published in 1707; his works are regarded as the greatest foreign influence on eighteenth-century English comic fiction, and his Gil Blas was Soane's favourite novel (q.v.). Soane attached a quotation from this work on the exhibition of Gandy's bird's-eye view of the ruins of the Bank of England at the Royal Academy in 1830, cat. no. 1052 (Graves: vol. IV, p. 203). This edition includes also the 'Entretiens sérieux et comiques des cheminées de Madrid' which together with 'Une journée des parques' and 'Les béquilles du diable boiteux' are by Laurent Bordelon. No earlier edition of this combination of works is found on COPAC or at the Bibliothèque nationale; two previous editions of Le diable boiteux including the 'Entretiens' are both dated 1789. The frontispiece is signed by G. Texier. A list of 'Livres De Fonds Qui se trouvent chez le même Libraire' appears on the verso of the half-title.
