Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII, roi de Suède was first published in London in 1731 with a fictitious 'Basle' imprint. Based on his acquaintance with a former companion of Charles XII of Sweden, this was Voltaire's first work of history, defining greatness in terms of the advancement of civilization rather than military glory. This anonymous translation first appeared in 1732 when there were four London editions and one in Dublin; the present edition is a reissue of the second edition of the same year, with a reset title-page. The frontispiece portrait of Charles XII is by J. Vandergucht. Includes at the end 'A Letter To the Rt. Hon. the Lord *****, Giving a description of the Person, Behaviour, &c. of the King of Sweden, King Augustus, and King Stanislaus'. Publisher's advertisement on final page. ESTC t137898.

Copy Notes Pencil price =2s= on the recto of the frontispiece, probably in the hand of the bookseller Thomas Boone.
