Originally published in Paris in 1788 in volume IV of Saint-Pierre's Etudes de la Nature, and separately in 1789. It was widely translated and frequently illustrated, and served as the inspiration for paintings, stage performances and opera in the following decades. There were three different English translations in 1788--89. ESTC t181079.
